Background to the NIHR Carbon Reduction Guidelines research project

Professor Dame Sally C. Davies, Director General of Research and Development Department of Health commissioned NETSCC to develop NIHR-wide guidelines for researchers to help reduce carbon expenditure in health research.  The project was instigated following the success of the NETSCC Research-on-Research project, the Carbon cost of pragmatic randomised controlled trials: retrospective analysis of sample of trials (BMJ. 2009; 339:b4187).

The project was led by a working group, chaired by Professor Ian Roberts at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. A consultation workshop, attended by senior NIHR stakeholders, was held in January 2010 to discuss a draft version of the guidelines. A report of the consultation workshop is available here

The guidelines were open for electronic consultation from the 8 March to the 19 March 2010.
